Cuffing season is the half-joke that around the time the clocks change, people who were perfectly happy being single in July develop a sudden interest in someone to stay in with. The nights get longer, going out gets less appealing, and the couch starts to look like a destination.
You can be cynical about it or you can take the hint. Here's what's worth having in the drawer before the weather does the rest.
First, the actual point
The thing that makes a night in good is not owning more objects. It's having something to do that isn't scrolling on separate phones two feet apart.
So this list is built around that rather than around gadgetry. Everything here is either cheap enough to be an impulse or genuinely worth the money, and all of it works better with a second person present.
1. Something that takes the decision away
The hardest part of a night in is that nobody wants to be the one who suggests something. A prompt solves it by making the deck responsible instead of you.
Let's F*ck! Sex Position Card Game ($7.99) is eight dollars and does exactly that job. It's silly, which is the feature. Games like this work not because the suggestions are revelatory but because they turn a slightly awkward conversation into a thing you're both just going along with.
2. Something for the senses
Sex and Mischief Satin Blindfold ($7.67). Under eight dollars, double-layered satin, and the single highest ratio of effect to expense in the shop.
Taking sight out turns ordinary touch into something you actually notice. It's also about the gentlest possible on-ramp if you're curious about the lightly-tied-up end of things and don't want to buy a kit and a manual to find out. No commitment, no learning curve, comes in black, red or pink.
3. Something warm
A massage candle is the seasonal one. It burns into a warm oil you pour straight onto skin, so it's a candle and a massage oil and an excuse to touch someone for twenty minutes, which is the real product.
Jelique Netflix and Chill Massage Candle ($21.99). Yes, that is genuinely what it's called. We didn't name it, but we're not going to pretend it isn't perfect for this list.
If warmth is the part that appeals, temperature play is the wider category and it goes in both directions.
4. Something you both get a say in
If you buy one real thing this season, make it a toy that isn't for one of you. We-Vibe Sync Lite ($89.00) is a C-shaped couples vibrator worn during sex, so it's working on both people at once, hands free.
It's app controlled, which means one of you can be running it from across the room. It also means it keeps working when one of you is travelling, which is a better argument for it than any of the marketing.
Prefer something simpler and cheaper for two? A vibrating ring does a version of the same job. We wrote a beginner's guide to cock rings.
5. Lube, which is not optional and not really a fifth item
It's on every list we write because it makes everything else on every list better, and because it is the cheapest upgrade available to anybody.
Water-based is the default, since it's the one that's safe with silicone toys, and the Sync Lite above is silicone. If you own one bottle, own that one. Winter is also the season people notice dryness more, between the heating being on constantly and everything else that time of year does, so if that's you, a thicker formula is worth the extra couple of dollars.
What not to bother with
Two honest notes, since a starter pack that only says yes isn't much of a guide.
Skip the enormous kits. The bondage-set-in-a-box things look like tremendous value and are usually six items you'll use once, made from material you would not choose individually. Buying the blindfold on its own for eight dollars is the better version of that decision.
And skip anything jelly, squishy, and vaguely plastic-smelling, however cheap it is. Those are porous, meaning they trap bacteria you can't clean out. Silicone, glass and metal are all available at these prices, so there's no reason to compromise.
The takeaway
Cuffing season is a joke about a real thing: it gets cold, you stay in more, and the difference between a good winter and a boring one is mostly whether you made any plans. Forty dollars covers the blindfold, the card game and the candle, which is a genuinely better Friday than most things costing the same.
