Wear what you already own. Buy one piece that does the talking: a wig, wings, claws or a hat. Order by Friday, October 16 on Economy shipping, or Thursday, October 22 on Expedited.
Halloween is next weekend. You have a party, you do not have a costume, and you have not had the time or the will to think about one. Good news: you already own most of it.
The best last-minute costumes are not costumes at all. They are an outfit you already wear, plus one piece that tells everyone who you are. Nobody at the party knows you put it together in ten minutes, and that is not something we plan to tell them.
Below are eight recipes. Each one is the closet part, then the one piece, then the finishing touch. And yes, there is still time to get that piece delivered, if you order by Thursday. The date is further down.
The rule behind every good last-minute costume
Pick a character people can name from across the room. Anything that needs explaining has already failed. Then spend all your effort on one piece and none on the rest. Wings, a wig or a hat do the whole job. A plain black outfit underneath is not lazy, it is a frame.
If you are still deciding what to go as, our guide to picking a costume you will actually wear covers that. This post assumes you have decided, or you are about to steal one of these.
Eight costumes: your closet plus one piece
1. The femme fatale
From your closet: a black dress or a black suit, and your best red lip.

Finishing touch: a $4.99 wig cap underneath keeps it in place until the last song.
2. The cat, for anyone
From your closet: all black, fitted or not. Eyeliner for whiskers.

Finishing touch: put the gloves on last. Claws and phone screens do not get along.
3. The dark angel
From your closet: anything black. A slip dress, jeans and a tee, a black suit.

Finishing touch: smudged dark eyeshadow. Imperfect is the point.
4. The angel
From your closet: white, cream or gold. One color, head to toe.

Finishing touch: highlighter, lots of it. Angels do not do matte.
5. Cupid
From your closet: something pink, red or white. A tank and shorts works. So does a suit.

Finishing touch: aim the arrow at people all night. It is a very good icebreaker.
6. The bunny
From your closet: a black bodysuit, or a black suit and a bow tie. Both work, and both have been working since the sixties.

Finishing touch: a white collar and cuffs, if you want to take it all the way.
7. The officer
From your closet: a dark button-up shirt, dark trousers or a skirt, aviators.

Finishing touch: keep a straight face. The hat is funnier when you do not acknowledge it.
8. The masquerade guest
From your closet: your most formal thing. The wedding-guest dress, the good suit.

Finishing touch: do not tell anyone your name. Commit to the bit.
If you would rather open one box
Some years you want the whole thing done for you. The Leg Avenue Broomstick Babe ($74.99) is a complete witch: a laced deep-V bodysuit, a cinched waist, garters attached and a tall hat. Two pieces, no safety pins. Small, medium and large were all in stock as we wrote this.
The dates that matter
Halloween is on a Saturday this year. Here is how to make sure your one piece gets there first:
- Expedited shipping: order by Thursday, October 22. Choose it at checkout and it arrives by Friday, October 30.
Every order ships in plain, unmarked packaging. The box says nothing about what is inside, including which character you picked.
Every piece in this post, plus wigs, wings, masks and full costumes, is in one place.
